Developmental Neurogenetics

Dr. Narayanan has a special interest in the genetic basis of neurological disorders. In collaboration with Dr. Kirk Aleck (Pediatric Genetics) and research scientists in the Neurogenomics Division of TGen (Dr. David Craig) , he has established the Pediatric Neurogenetics Center (Center for Excellence) at the Children's Health Center, St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center. His research interests include the neurobiology of genetic disorders (genes to pathogenesis), cell adhesion molecules and synapse formation. Currently active projects in the Developmental Neurogenetics Lab at the BNI include the following: a) Molecular mechanisms that lead from MeCP2 gene mutation to neuronal and dendrite pathology - study of the MeCP2 A140V mouse model; b) Studies of axonal transport defects in NF1; c) study of intrafamilial phenotypic variability in tuberous sclerosis complex and neurofibromatosis type 1 - the role of allele-specific gene expression.
